Biking Central Park

It was a beautiful day in New York on Friday May 6, 2011. Sunny with a slight breeze, 68 degrees. A perfect day for a bike ride.

We rode the subway from Times Square to Columbus Circle.  Columbus Circle is one of the main entrances to Central Park. We rented our bicycles just outside of the entrance to Central Park.   There are many companies that rent bicycles outside of the park. As we neared the entrance, four men swarmed us asking the same question, "Want to rent bicycle" , each in their distinct accents. Each followed up by telling us that they were cheaper.   We were quite overwhelmed by their approach. They did not have bicycles available in sight.  Rather, they wanted to take us somewhere else to rent bikes, are they legit????

We decided to take pictures of our surroundings rather than dive straight into renting our bicycles. We also watched the same individuals approach other visitors. On several occasions, we found them arguing over who approached first and who should get the business of the customer.

We settled on one company that rented bicycles outside of the park. We chose these guys because they had their bicycles available on-sight. I remember seeing their website prior to leaving for our trip.

We rented the bicycle for 2 hours.   The gentleman at the rental shop informed us that the perimeter of the park is about 4 miles and that 2 hours should be sufficient to make a few stops along the way. In hindsight, we should have rented for 3 hours since it was such a nice day.

The areas that bikes may be ridden are strictly defined.   Most of the sights are located on the mall. Consequently, we rode our bikes on the road to get to one major area to another. Walked the bikes on the mall to the attractions,<

In fact, we spent about half the time walking our bikes from one sight to another.

There are many points of interest along the way.

We had a great time on our bike ride.
I would definitely want to do this again sometime.
Next time, I would rent the bikes for a whole day.
